- According to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), as of the latest update, at least 303 people have been confirmed dead across the affected areas, with 279 still missing.

- This disaster is part of a broader wave of cyclone-triggered flooding and landslides across Southeast Asia. Combined death tolls in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand have exceeded 500, with rescue operations severely hampered by difficult terrain and continued heavy rain.

- Illegal deforestation is widely cited as a major aggravating factor. A study published in PLOS One found that forest loss in Sumatra has increased flood and landslide risk by up to 71% when combined with heavy rainfall.
